{"id":33,"date":"2006-11-05T01:13:53","date_gmt":"2006-11-05T00:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/muttznutz.net\/muttzblog\/\/about-the-crayfish-thing\/2006\/11\/05"},"modified":"2009-08-17T02:21:56","modified_gmt":"2009-08-17T01:21:56","slug":"about-the-crayfish-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/muttznutz.net\/muttzblog\/white-clawed-crayfish\/about-the-crayfish-thing","title":{"rendered":"About the Crayfish thing &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, this all started back in August 2006.<br \/>\nI was in Dosthill Quarry with my camera, when my buddy Mark pointed out a crayfish &#8211; the first one I&#8217;d seen.<br \/>\n<a rel=\"lightbox[post]\" href=\"http:\/\/www.muttznutz.net\/images\/ukdiving2006\/dosthill\/slides\/P8050212.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:left;margin:5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.muttznutz.net\/images\/ukdiving2006\/dosthill\/thumbs\/P8050212.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I did a bit of digging to ID it &#8211; there aren&#8217;t many resources for freshwater crustaceans &#8211; but found that there are two species in the UK, one of which (the White Clawed Crayfish) is both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukbap.org.uk\/UKPlans.aspx?ID=124#1\">endangered and protected<\/a>.<br \/>\nThis is the one that seemed to feature in my photos, but I couldn&#8217;t find any record of these at Dosthill.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"lightbox[post]\" href=\"http:\/\/www.muttznutz.net\/images\/ukdiving2006\/dosthill\/slides\/P8050213.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;margin:5px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.muttznutz.net\/images\/ukdiving2006\/dosthill\/thumbs\/P8050213.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I emailed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.staffordshirewildlife.org.uk\/\">Staffordshire Wildlife Trust<\/a> &#8211; who confirmed that the photos are of the White Clawed Crayfish &#8211; but they hadn&#8217;t had any sightings reported since the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>Now, it turns out that loads of people knew about the crays, but nobody had told the Wildlife Trust, so we&#8217;re in touch with them now.
